As of writing this article, almost 2000 people have signed the petition ‘Android 10 for Sony Xperia XZ1’ on Change.org. The petition calls for Sony to roll out the latest Android 10 software update for Xperia XZ1 devices.
Sony released the list of devices that are eligible for the Android 10 update last year, and the petition comes after the Japanese tech giant decided to exclude Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact from the list. The list only includes Xperia 5, 1, 10 Plus, 10, XZ3, XZ2 Premium, XZ2, and XZ2 Compact.
In case you didn’t know, the Xperia XZ1 was launched in 2017 and originally came with Android 8.0 Oreo. Since the launch, the phone has received only one major OS update — Android 9.0 Pie — and the petitioners are clearly not happy as Sony fails to keep its promise of 2-year support for premium devices.
One petitioner Andrew Jackson writes: ‘I’m an XZ1 owner. I’ve owned Sony phones from 1998 (Ericsson to Sony Ericcson to Sony) and you’ve always offered excellent support. One of the reasons that I stayed with you is because of your dependability and reliability. Please release Android 10 for my XZ1. Thank you.’
It is not clear if Sony is aware of the petition or not. And it remains to be seen if the firm will include Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact in its list of Android 10-eligible devices, once the petition is signed by 2500 people or more.
Recapping the specifications, the Xperia XZ1 features a 5.2-inch Full HD display and packs Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 19MP rear camera, 13MP front camera, and 2700mAh battery.
Meanwhile, the compact variant of the handset — XZ1 Compact — has a smaller 4.6-inch HD display. Other specs include Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, 19MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, and 2700mAh battery.
