Huawei is likely to unveil its Mate X in 5G variants this October. It comes packed with apps fit enough to compete against Samsung’s foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold.

CEO Richard Yu, while addressing the media at IFA announced that Huawei may start to sell its Mate X foldable phone as soon as next month, though he had hoped that it would be on sale already. Yu went on to explain that Mate X took longer than expected because of 5G rollout, and also as they had to allow app developers time to adjust their apps to the new screen size.

Earlier reports suggested that Mate X would not be launched until November. But as Yu has announced, it could probably hit the market by October.

Yu announced on Friday, “Maybe next month we can start to sell it globally. The manufacturing of this phone is not only very expensive but has some challenges for volume and mass production.” Yu also said, “Huawei may even incorporate its new Kirin 990 chip into the device. It would be possible to do this as the chip is already commercially available.”

Mate X was first showcased at MWC in Barcelona, early this year. This phone is likely to give a tough competition to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which postponed its launch earlier due to some flaws with its screen. After fixing the screen flaws, Samsung finally re-launched the Galaxy Fold on September 6 in South Korea. It is expected to be unveiled in other countries by September 18 onwards.

Galaxy Fold follows the mechanism of opening and closing like a book, but to open the Mate X, you need to curve the screen from outside. Watch out for this space for more reviews.
