Sure, OnePlus doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to software updates. But recently, they outdid themselves by rolling out regular updates to their recently released flagship phone OnePlus 5. In fact, the Chinese company had rolled out the first update to the device within its first week after launch. While a recent one – OxygenOS 4.5.8 – has added EIS for 4K video recording. But unfortunately, it seems it’s not all roses and sunshine for OnePlus’ other phones – OnePlus 3 and 3T.
OnePlus, in a Q&A session posted on its forum, has confirmed that Android 8.0 ‘O’ would be the last major update to OnePlus 3, 3T devices. Well, it’s not a rumor we’re talking here! The question – How long will the OP3/3T continue to receive software support? – posted on the OnePlus forum by a user was in fact answered by a OnePlus’ executive – Oliver Z. You can check out the screenshot of the Q&A below.
While the news might disappoint many OnePlus 3 / 3T users worldwide, a few of them are happy to see the Chinese company put some efforts to bring in Android O to the older devices. The latter set of people had given up hopes for the next Android O update, and that isn’t completely their fault, considering what OnePlus did with their OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X smartphones.
However, the company has promised that it will continue to provide Android security patch updates to the OnePlus 3/3T handsets for the foreseeable future. But, ditching the support for the OnePlus 3T within less than a year after its launch doesn’t sound cool at all, at least to me!
Oliver further added that a few features found on the OnePlus 5 will not make it to OnePlus 3 and 3T devices mainly due to the hardware differences. Notably, OnePlus won’t release features such as Reading Mode, off-screen gestures and DCI-P3 calibration on the previous generation handsets.
