Sony’s Q1 smartphone of this year, like always, has failed to impress both critics as well as Android enthusiasts except obviously their hardcore fans that almost always never forget to bash me in the comments. And this time around, even their biggest fans are disappointed as one of the best features of the Sony Xperia 1 is about to get outdated in no time. But let’s leave that aside (can we?) as Sony has something interesting for us this time around in the form of a pocket cooler dubbed ‘Reon Pocket’ that has completed its crowdfunding campaign successfully on the Japanese giant-owned crowdfunding website, First Flight.
As you must’ve picked up from the naming, the Reon Pocket is basically a portable cooler that you can slip into the pocket of a specially-designed undergarment (of course it’s available on the crowdfunding page as well) which will help lower the temperature of your body. It uses Peltier thermoelectric cooling technology and only weighs about three ounces (85 grams), so you can just slide that thing into your undershirt pocket and forget it ever exists.
All you need to do to get the Reon Pocket up and running is connect it to a smartphone via Bluetooth, slide it into the pocket of the Sony undershirt, and then adjust the temperature using an app on your smartphone. As well as cooling you during summer, the device can also be used to keep you warm in the winter. There’s an auto mode coming as well that will automatically adjust the temperature based on the surrounding environment.
The best thing about this pocket cooler is that it’ll last around 24 hours on a full charge. For charging, there’s a USB-C port and you can get the cooler fully charger in just 2 hours which is impressive. The device supports both Android and iOS and is available in two variants — Reon Pocket Lite and Reon Pocket Standard. In the Lite model, you’ll have to manually modify the temperature via your smartphone while in the Standard one, there’s an update rolling out soon that should automatically control the temperature.
This is a Japan-exclusive, at least for now, and can be pre-ordered only via Sony’s own First Flight crowdfunding platform. But if you’re curious about the pricing anyway, buying a combo of one device and an undershirt will set you back anywhere around $130. Yeah, it ain’t cheap buddy! Surprisingly though, the campaign is already way beyond its original funding goal of 66,000,000 yen ($606276) with over 4200 supporters and is still going pretty strong!
