A Lenovo K6 Note smartphone explodes and catches fire in the pocket while the user was waiting at the bus stop.

It is no joke that the Lithium ion batteries are the most dangerous component in a smartphone. We were all reminded of that when Samsung had to issue a worldwide recall for its flagship phablet, Galaxy Note 7, in September last year. The Galaxy Note 7 explosions were reportedly caused due to design flaws and manufacturing defects in the battery. However, the latest phone to face a similar fate is not a Samsung Galaxy handset, instead, it’s the Lenovo K6 Note.

A Lenovo K6 Note smartphone has burst into flames in the pocket of an Indian student (age: 21), while he was waiting at the bus stop. He said he felt something burning against his leg as smoke started coming out of the phone. He immediately tossed the phone onto the ground, but was still left with first-degree burns. Soon after the incident, the student was immediately rushed to the hospital. The device was purchased on 28th December 2016 for a price of Rs 15,559 (approx. $241) from a Lulu Connect outlet located in Kerala, India.

It is unclear, as of now, what caused the phone to catch fire, but, problems with Li-ion batteries have caused handsets to spontaneously burst into flames in the past. So, our bet is on the huge 4000 mAh Li-ion battery packed inside the Lenovo K6 Note. Further, some K6 Note users have also been complaining about the phone battery overheating, even during mild usage.

Launched in September last year, the Lenovo K6 is a mid-range smartphone from the Chinese company. It features a large 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with FullHD (1920 x 1080p) display resolution. Besides that, it is powered by a Snapdragon 430 chipset, along with 3/4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.

For imaging, the device has a 16MP camera in the back and an 8MP snapper on the front. Apart from that, it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. However, the main highlight of the phone is not any of the aforementioned specs; it is the massive 4000 mAh battery packed inside it.

We’ve reached out to Lenovo India for a statement regarding the issue, and will update this story as and when we hear back!

Below, you’ll find the pictures and a video of the burnt Lenovo K6 Note phone.

Abhin’s love for all things tech started when he got his first smartphone, Galaxy S (the first), in 2010. Since then, he has been crazy about technology and tried out all major Android flagships from Samsung, and HTC. He currently uses a Google Pixel 4a as his daily driver.
