Sony’s SRS-LSR200 remote control is not your typical TV remote control, it’s also a full-blown smart speaker.

Sony is all set to take the curtains off its 2020 flagship phone, Xperia 1.1, on February 24 in an online event. Since the company isn’t attending the MWC event, Sony has jumped the gun and launched a cool TV remote control that also doubles as a speaker. We’re talking about the Sony SRS-LSR200 remote control that has already been launched in Japan.

Mind you, the SRS-LSR200 is not your typical TV remote control. It is also a wireless speaker that offers up to 13 hours of battery life, according to The Verge.

And the best part is that, unlike the normal TV remote at our homes, this one won’t go missing that easy thanks to its bulk form factor. On top of this speaker/remote device, you will find all the buttons one would expect to see in a TV remote. However, instead of buttons for controlling volume level, Sony has gone for a knob to do the job — for some reason.

There is a charging base that can be attached to TVs (not just Sony TVs) for charging the device, and it charges from zero to full in just three hours. The remote control communicates with the TV through the base thanks to a 2.4GHz wireless channel. Interestingly, the TV remote can play audio through its speakers simultaneously with the TV’s speakers.

The device starts shipping from February 22 — two days before the launch of Xperia 1.1 — and is available for pre-order now through the Sony Japan website for JPY 20,000 (roughly around $180).
