Here is everything we know so far about OnePlus 6.
Update May 16, 2018: OnePlus has finally launched their 2018-flagship phone, OnePlus 6, putting an end to rumors and leaks. Read more about the specs, features, and price of OnePlus 6 here.
We’ve been seeing a lot of leaks and rumors regarding the OnePlus 6 for quite some time now. So I thought to squeeze all that we know about the handset in an article to make it easier for you to catch up with what you may have missed.
As you know already, OnePlus launched their latest smartphone dubbed OnePlus 5T in November last year. Though it was only an incremental upgrade over the OnePlus 5, the launch of such a futuristic-looking phone was something inevitable.
At a time when every single manufacturer — except Sony, of course — switched to bezel-less trend, OnePlus chose to stay with the good ol’ 16:9 design. OnePlus told they weren’t able to make the switch because they were a “small company” and didn’t have the resources to make the big leap. And, that was in June of 2017 when they launched the OnePlus 5.
Later, the company knew that launch of an (almost) bezel-less phone was much needed for securing their position in the smartphone business. In November 2017, they launched the OnePlus 5T with fewer bezels and an improved camera (although, questionable!).
However, both the OnePlus 5 and 5T still lacks one significant feature that comes onboard with most flagships today. It’s the IP certification to make sure your device is not damaged while you’re taking a dive in a pool. There’s a good news for the OnePlus fans, though. New rumors suggest that OnePlus 6 will surely feature the IP68 certification, meaning it should be able to survive submersion for up to 30 minutes in 1.5 meters of water.
Without further ado, let’s see what we know so far about OnePlus 6.
OnePlus 6 Specs
OnePlus never settles for anything less than the best. So, it’s safe to assume at this point that OnePlus 6 will feature Qualcomm’s latest and greatest mobile processor, the Snapdragon 845. To compare, the firm’s last two flagships — OnePlus 5 and 5T — came sporting the Snapdragon 835 chipset, which also powered Samsung’s best smartphone of 2017, the Galaxy S8.
Now, in case you didn’t know, the Snapdragon 845 is told to be 25% faster and 30% more battery efficient than the 835. Also, the former features a separate security processor in the form of Secure Processing Unit for storing biometric scans.
Besides that, the device will be available in two storage variants just like other OnePlus phones. Speaking of which, there is going to be a base model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. And, there will be an 8GB RAM variant rocking 128GB internal storage.
That’s all we know so far about OnePlus 6 specs, although we could hopefully see a bump from existing Full-HD display resolution and dual camera technology.
OnePlus 6 won’t have a notch
We’ve told this before and would repeat it again — OnePlus 6 won’t have a notch like the OnePlus X. A source close to the company has already confirmed that to us already. As per the source, the topmost bezel will bear all the hardware modules for facilitating face recognition.
Unlike the 5T’s face unlock feature, the tipster also told us that OnePlus 6’s face recognition technology is so advanced that it could be used for authorizing payments.
OnePlus 6 Release Date
There’s nothing new here — OnePlus always launches a new smartphone in June, and we don’t think that’s gonna change this time around. In fact, the company’s CEO Pete Lau already confirmed in a press meet that the firm’s next-generation phone would launch sometime in the second quarter.
That’s not it! We also have a leaked document allegedly revealing the launch date of OnePlus 6 to be June 2018. The document reveals the launch date of all 2018-flagships that would have the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset onboard. On the flip side, it’s worth noting that the leaked paper was, however, wrong about the LG G7 and the Xperia XZ2.
If OnePlus follows the same roadmap, then the OnePlus 6 should be available to the consumers within a few days following the launch event.
OnePlus 6 Price [Expected]
If there is anything that we are most certainly uncertain about the OnePlus 6, it has to be the price. We may know the potential specifications and design of the next OnePlus handset, but the expected pricing of the device has not been revealed in any rumors or leaks thus far.
If you take a look at the best-selling flagship phones in India, you’ll notice that the first position doesn’t belong to a Samsung or Apple phone. That is if the International Data Corporation’s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker 2017 for Q2 results are accurate.
This has been possible for OnePlus not just by making phones with great specs and impressive design, but also by pricing them competitively in the market — a market where you’ll now need to have at least a $1000 in your pocket to get the best of what it has to offer.
The same was the case when they launched the OnePlus 5T, which retained the pricing of its predecessor, the OnePlus 5.
It’s crystal clear at this point that competitive pricing was one of the significant ingredients in OnePlus’ successful recipe. And, OnePlus ain’t gonna change that, not at least anytime soon! However, the OnePlus 6 will be priced slightly higher than its forerunners because the former is said to pack several new features and improved hardware on board.
OnePlus might probably increase the price by $50; the new handset might set you back around $550 (~Rs 35,999) for the 64GB storage variant while the 128GB variant might cost about $630 (~Rs 40,999).
