OnePlus continues its ‘bang for your bucks’ formula with the launch of OnePlus 6. OnePlus 6 is the best phone you can get for around $500. And, it is now available in Silk White color as well.
OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer that currently holds the record for selling the highest number of premium phones in India, has launched their much-awaited flagship phone of 2018, OnePlus 6. The device can be purchased in one of the four color variants — Silk White, Midnight Black, Mirror Black, and Marvel Avengers Limited Edition.
The new device is the successor to OnePlus 5T that was launched in November last year. Unlike what one would expect from a six-month refresh cycle, the Oppo subsidiary has pulled off a radically new device that packs top-of-the-line specifications for an affordable price tag.
Much like the recently unveiled LG G7 ThinQ, the new OnePlus handset features an all-screen front notched design, rocking a screen-to-body ratio of 83.8%. For the sake of comparison, the firm’s 5T handset featured a screen-to-body ratio of 80%.
The phone is available in three color variants, including Midnight Black, Mirror Black, and Silk White. Also, as an icing on top of the cake, it will be shortly available in Marvel Avengers-branded limited edition as well.
In terms of design, the OnePlus 6 features glass on the front and back, replacing the curved Aluminium rear of the OnePlus 5 and 5T. Though the new model features a glass rear, it’s quite disappointing to note that OnePlus couldn’t add wireless charging support for the device.
The new device features a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen upfront with a display resolution of 1080×2280 pixels and 19:9 aspect ratio. It’s worth noting that the slightly larger display on the OnePlus 6 is squeezed into the same body size as its forerunner with 6.01-inch, thanks to the new skinnier bottom bezels and notched top bezel.
If you’re not a big fan of the notched design and you want that graceless thing out of your sight, you can do so by tweaking some settings. However, by doing so, you are essentially blacking out a small chunk of your screen real estate.
Though the device doesn’t cost as much as a Samsung Galaxy S9, mind you, this one is in no way inferior to the latter. In fact, the OnePlus 6 is powered by the same mobile chipset as the Samsung counterpart, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.
Other specifications of the device include 8GB RAM, 128/256GB of onboard storage, and 3300mAh battery with support for Dash Charging. There is a base version with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage available as well.
The camera department is backed by a dual camera setup on the rear, consisting of a 16MP Sony IMX519 sensor with f/1.7 aperture and a 20MP Sony IMX376K sensor with f/1.7 aperture. The front camera is a 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The device runs the latest version of OxygenOS, based on Android 8.1 Oreo, out of the box.
The dual-SIM smartphone comes with connectivity options including WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, and 4G LTE. As for the ports, the device comes with a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
As far as the pricing goes, the base version of the device with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage will set you back around $529. Amazon India will start selling the device from 22nd May (21st May for Amazon Prime users) for a price of Rs 34,999. The Marvel Avengers limited edition of the OnePlus 6 handset is listed on the e-tailer website as well, it will be sold at a price of Rs 44,999.
Latest news related to the phone:
1/6/18: OnePlus 6 will be shortly available in Silk White color variant as well, besides the Midnight Black, Mirror Black, and Marvel Avengers Limited Edition variants that were available at launch. It’s worth noting that the new OnePlus 6 Silk White edition is available only in the 8GB RAM/128GB storage configuration, and is listed on Amazon India for a price of Rs. 39,999 — the same price as other color variants.
The sale of the new color variant hasn’t started yet, though there’s a “Notify me” button to let you know before it goes on sale. Here’s the promotional poster on Amazon India’s website:
30/6/18: According to a recent report, OnePlus 6’s face unlock can be tricked by using a picture. A true bummer indeed! A twitter handle that goes by the name ‘rik’ posted a video revealing that he could unlock his buddy’s phone by simply showing a cut-out of the owner’s face in front of the front-facing camera.
Sure, that sounds a bit alarming at first, but ain’t that something we should have expected already? I mean, this particular handset doesn’t come packed with any infrared 3D camera modules like the iPhone X. It’s for this exact same reason why the said biometric security feature of this device is not capable of approving online payments.
I printed my face to unlock my OnePlus 6 for the lulz… it worked ¯_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/rAVMq8JKBr
