Sony is shutting down its popular built-in music recognition application TrackID on 15th September 2017. The company recommends its users to download Shazam instead.

Heard of TrackID? The application that used to come pre-installed on all Xperia handsets before Xperia XZs and XZ Premium? Well, it is shutting down! Sony made the news official by displaying the following message on top of the application.

“TrackID is closing down! As of 15 September 2017, TrackID will no longer be available”

As mentioned in the message, the application will no longer be usable after 15th September this year. In case you are a regular user of this app, make sure to backup your TrackID history elsewhere, as that would be lost after this date.

To take up space the app has left, Sony recommends the TrackID users to download Shazam, which is yet another popular application that recognizes music, TV and other media around you. The specific reason behind the shut down is unknown as of now. The reason, according to Sony, is that “all businesses move forward, and sometimes this means that apps are discontinued”. And, we couldn’t agree more!

In case you didn’t know, TrackID was launched back in 2005. It came pre-installed on all Xperia devices since then. The app allows users to identify music using Gracenote’s music database, a company Sony acquired in 2008. However, Tribune bought Gracenote from the Japanese tech giant in 2014, and later sold to Neilson Holding towards the end of 2016.

Abhin’s love for all things tech started when he got his first smartphone, Galaxy S (the first), in 2010. Since then, he has been crazy about technology and tried out all major Android flagships from Samsung, and HTC. He currently uses a Google Pixel 4a as his daily driver.
