Sony confirms they will host an online launch event for the new phones.

Sony has confirmed that they won’t be attending the MWC 2020 tech show, citing safety concerns posed by Coronavirus. Many Xperia fans were expecting the Sony Xperia 1.1 with a penta-camera setup to be one of the biggest phone launches at the tech show. But with the firm pulling out of the event, the future of the phone remains unknown. However, Sony has confirmed that they will be launching the phone anyway — just not at the tech show.

Sony, in a press release, confirmed that it won’t be hosting the scheduled press event at the MWC 2020, but added that it will be organizing an online launch for the new handsets and that the launch event will be live-streamed through Sony Xperia YouTube channel.

The press release reads, ‘As we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of our customers, partners, media, and employees, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from exhibiting and participating at MWC 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.’

The online launch event is scheduled for Feb 24, 8:30 AM CET (1 PM IST). If we are to go by the rumors, Sony is expected to launch at least three Xperia phones — including two flagships and one mid-ranger.

Several other companies have decided to not attend the MWC tech show this year, including LG, Amazon, and Ericsson. And Sony is the latest tech giant to jump the bandwagon of companies not attending the biggest tech show on the planet. More companies are expected to join the list in the coming days.
