The specs, release date, price and more about the upcoming Sony Xperia 5 Plus.

Sony‘s smartphone business may not especially be a thriving one, but the tech giant is sure optimistic for 2020 as they prepare to launch a bunch of handsets at the upcoming MWC 2020 event. The firm is expected to launch at least three smartphones, two of which could be flagships while the other is said to be a mid-ranger. The most exciting of the three is easily the flagship Sony Xperia 5 Plus, which has been already been revealed in its entirety through a plethora of leaks and rumors.

This article will summarize everything we’ve learned thus far about the Xperia 5 Plus through leaks and rumors. The supposed design of the device has been revealed through a bunch of renders along with specifications, all thanks to OnLeaks and Slashleaks. Since both sources have a very good track record, it is safe to assume that we know pretty much everything there is to know about the upcoming Xperia handset.

Sony Xperia 5 Plus design

The Sony Xperia 5 Plus will feature a larger display than its predecessor.

The leaked renders reveal that the incoming Xperia 5 Plus will retain the design of Xperia 5 for the most part. Thus, those hoping for a radical new design are going to be disappointed. However, the top and bottom bezels sure look slightly smaller on the upcoming phone.

As one would expect from a ‘Plus’ variant, the Xperia 5 Plus will have a larger 6.6-inch OLED display on the front. Meanwhile, the Xperia 5 sports a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a display resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels.

Similar to the Xperia 5, the Plus variant will also have dual front-firing speakers, side-mounted fingerprint reader, triple rear cameras, and 3.5mm headphone jack (yes, Sony still thinks it’s relevant).

Meanwhile, the dimensions of the handset are said to be 168.2 x 71.6 x 8.1mm (the thickness would be 9.3mm including the protruding rear camera setup)

Sony Xperia 5 Plus Specs

The Xperia 5 Plus is said to be a flagship phone, and thus it will have all the high-end hardware one would expect to see in a 2020 premium handset. According to OnLeaks, the device will feature a large 6.6-inch OLED display, 8MP selfie camera, and triple rear cameras.

Although no information regarding the processor is known as of now, we expect it to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and fastest chipset, Snapdragon 865. Since SD865 is a 5G-capable chipset, the upcoming Xperia 5 Plus could very well be Sony’s first 5G smartphone.

Sony Xperia 5 Plus release date

Sony is expected to launch the 5 Plus at the MWC press event scheduled on February 24. However, since it is typical of Sony to take 4-5 additional months since launch to release the products to the market, we may not likely get our hands on the device until June or July.

Potential Price of Xperia 5 Plus

Sony is notorious for slapping hefty price tags on their smartphone offerings. The Xperia 1 was priced around $1000 at the time of launch. Similarly, Xperia 5 was sold for around $900 initially. Therefore, the Xperia 5 Plus will set you back at least $1000 when it hits the market sometime in June this year.

What about Xperia 5 Plus’ availability?

Unfortunately, the Xperia 5 Plus will be available only in limited markets, which includes Japan, Europe, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Although it may take a while after launch, Sony will likely release the product in the US as well. Since the smartphone division of the firm bid adieu to South America, South Asia, and Africa last year due to poor sales, none of the future Xperia handsets will be available in these regions.
