According to WABetaInfo, the Protected Backups feature on WhatsApp will store encrypted chats in the cloud.
A new security feature for WhatsApp called ‘Protected Backups’ might be on the way, according to WABetaInfo. The new feature was spotted in a new beta version of the instant messaging app.
Although Facebook is yet to announce any specifics, we do know pretty much everything there is to know about the upcoming feature. It was originally spotted in WhatsApp version number 2.20.66 for Android, though it isn’t functional as of now.
And now thanks to the new beta version, it appears that the Protected Backups feature will let the users store encrypted backups of their chats on Google Drive.
Currently, the cloud backups are not protected by end-to-end encryption like the messages. But as you enable the new security feature, the cloud backups will be password-protected. Thus, the content of the backups will not be accessible to anyone, including Google or WhatsApp.
Besides the upcoming security feature, WhatsApp is also working on refreshing the design of the iOS version of the app. As per the latest reports, several new design changes can be expected including long-press/slide options for messages. A dark theme option might on the way as well.
