New Sony Xperia phone in the works with Snapdragon 865 processor

It looks like Sony is not yet ready to give up on the smartphone segment even after the failure of two of its recently released Xperia phones, namely Xperia 1 and Xperia 5. According to a new report, courtesy of a Japanese blog AndroPlus (via GSMArena), the company is working on a new flagship phone that will come packed with yet-to-go-official Snapdragon 865 processor.

SM8250 which is supposedly the internal model number of the incoming chipset has been mentioned on Sony’s firmware distribution server, which essentially means that the Japanese tech giant could be working on a new handset powered by the said SoC. Other than a recent rumor suggesting SD865 will be available in two variants — one with integrated 5G modem and the other with only 4G connectivity, not much is known about the chipset or the smartphone.

Meanwhile, in the other news, if you pre-order a failing Xperia 5 handset via Mobiles.co.uk, you can get a free pair of Sony’s own WF-1000XM3 headphones that is worth £200.

For the uninitiated, Sony Xperia 5 is essentially a watered-down variant of Xperia 1 with a smaller 6.1-inch (can’t really call a compact model, eh?) screen with a display resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB RAM, and 128GB storage. For additional storage, there’s a MicroSD slot that expansion up to 1TB. The only bummer is that it’s a shared SIM setup, meaning you can either throw in an extra sim card or a micro SD card at a time.

In terms of photography, the device comes with a triple 12MP camera setup on the rear and an 8MP camera on the front. It runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box and is backed by a 3140mAh battery. Needless to say, it’s a great choice (probably the only one as well) for those looking for compact-sized phones.

Abhin’s love for all things tech started when he got his first smartphone, Galaxy S (the first), in 2010. Since then, he has been crazy about technology and tried out all major Android flagships from Samsung, and HTC. He currently uses a Google Pixel 4a as his daily driver.
