If you ask anyone about the best camera phone in the world, chances are likely the person would say the Sony Xperia Flagship. But apparently, that’s not the case now!
Gone are the days when Sony’s flagship phones came with the best phone cameras on the market. Sure, the camera specs on their latest flagship, Xperia XZ Premium, sounds better than the Galaxy S8. But, the megapixel count on the camera doesn’t matter when it cannot take high-quality photos. And that is, unfortunately, the case with the XZ Premium handset.
While Sony’s XZP has won praise from the Xperia fans for its Galaxy S8-grade specifications, it’s camera left something to be desired, especially when compared to other flagships including the Galaxy S8 and LG G6. Sure, it boasts a 19MP, f/2.0 sensor on the back that Sony promises to take pictures with great detail. The camera also packs features such as Ultra slow-mo, super fast focus, and better light capture.
While the slow motion feature at 960 fps is indeed an amazing feature to have, there is apparently a lens distortion issue that is troubling the users. Personally, I wouldn’t pay 800 bucks for a phone that has got this sort of issue. Also, the distortion seems more undesirable when taking pictures in low-light conditions.
According to Sony, the camera on the XZ Premium packs a hardware spec called “Anti-Distortion” that will work against warping. But, the opposite of that is what exactly is happening to the pictures which are getting grievously warped throughout all possible angles. And Sony, this issue never bothered your previous handsets when such a feature didn’t exist. However, we don’t know for now if this is a hardware or software problem, and Sony’s comment on the issue didn’t help any further!
“Sony Mobile Communications has received a small number of comments from consumers that they have experienced distortion in some images taken with their Xperia XZs and Xperia XZ Premium devices. We would like to assure our customers that with our new Motion Eye Camera we are delivering the best possible balance of image quality and advanced features. The comments experienced are familiar for a wide-angle field of view lens and accepted within the industry and we believe we are still providing the highest possible image quality whilst capturing more of the scene in the photo with its wide field of view.”
According to the users, those objects that should actually appear straight are getting distorted, thus, making it look severely warped throughout. Now, this could be a huge bummer for serious photographers who purchased the device for a pocket-friendly SLR camera alternative. You can learn more about the issue by referring to the images below where it is compared to the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7.
